Summary of Event

Bill Pranger, Florida State Officer for the Southern Cruisers Riding Club received a call from Eric, a member of the Tampa Bay chapter of the SCRC wanting to know if he knew anyone in the SCRC that could use an electric wheelchair. Bill told Eric that he did not know of anyone personally, however he would check with our National Officers. None of the officers knew of anyone that was in need. One of the officers suggested that the wheelchair could be donated to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis. Bill checked with Eric to see what he thought, and Eric said that he would be honored to donate the wheelchair to the children. He then told Bill the story of how he came about having this wheelchair. It was purchased for his mother to use, but she was only able to use it for 3 months before she passed away. Eric said that the wheelchair has been sitting in his living room for the past 3 years and thought it was time to pass it on to someone that could use the wheelchair.

At this point we had an electric wheelchair that we wanted to donate to the kids at St. Jude and had to figure out how to get the wheelchair to them. The SCRC uses the Delphi Forums as a major way of communicating, so Bill went on and posted what we needed. If you have the time to read the whole thread you will understand what this club is all about. As the thread shows, there were people from all over the country wanting to be a part of the relaying of the wheelchair from Tampa to Memphis. Bill then received a call form our National President, Rick Perry asking if he saw what was happening. It was suggested that maybe what we could do is set up a relay around the country with the wheelchair. Bill went back to the forum and the response was unbelievable. It was decided that the wheelchair would be loaded in an enclosed trailer that was donated by another member in the Middle TN Chapter. (Nashville area) The relay would be known as the Lois Layton-Noriega Memorial Wheelchair Relay. Then we thought that the wheelchair would be lonely in the trailer by it's self and decided we would collect toys for the kids and load them in the trailer as it went around the country.

The relay kicked off on Friday the 28th on Nov. 2003 and left the Tampa area to go around the state of Florida and then head north for the trip around the country. Check the Map and Route page to follow its journey around the country. A web site will also be set up so that individuals can sponsor the relay to benefit St Jude Children's Research Hospital.

About St. Jude Children's Research Hospital

St Jude Children's Research Hospital, located in Memphis, Tennessee, is one of the world's premier centers for research and treatment of catastrophic diseases in children, primarily pediatric cancers.  About 4,300 patients are seen at St. Jude yearly, most of who are treated on a continuing outpatient basis as part of ongoing research programs. The hospital also maintains 56 beds for patients requiring hospitalization during treatment.  To date, St. Jude has treated more than 19,000 children from across the United States and 60 foreign countries.  Patients at St. Jude are accepted by physician referral when the child or adolescent is newly diagnosed or suspected of having a disease under research and treatment by the St. Jude staff.

ALSAC/St. Jude covers all costs not covered by insurance for medical treatment rendered at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.  Families without insurance are never asked to pay.  For this reason, the Southern Cruisers Riding Club has chosen St Jude as our primary charity recipient.

During the year the Southern Cruisers raises funds at club sponsored charity events around the country. Along with funds, other items are needed by the children and families that visit St. Jude. Some items, due to the nature of treatment, can not be used at the facility. For this reason, we have provided a list of items that can be accepted and would be appreciated by the children and their families. Please visit the Approved Gifts page for a list of items that can be used at St Jude or one of their supporting facilities like the Ronald McDonald House.
